The Almanzo 100 Gravel Race has been running since 2007 in Spring Valley, Minnesota, USA. The Almanzo attracts upward of 600 entrants, it is also demanding, featuring almost 8,000 feet of vertical climbing and one of the most beautiful, traversing through rural Southern Minnesota farm country – gravel style! I’m a big fan of this sort of event, even if it’s miles away! First things first though…
The race itself is free to enter. Since 2007 Chris Skogen and his Almanzo 100 and Royal 162 have provided the premier platform for gravel endurance racing in the United States. Financed solely out of pocket, and with help from a dedicated family of volunteers, Skogen continually sets the bar high for an annual event that is looked forward to by riders of all stripes. But to help offset the cost they’re having a fundraising party.
So anyone in the area and fancies the whole deal should head on over and hand over some cash for fun (always a good deal). I know most of us can’t go but, as Mike from Banjo Brothers (one of the kind sponsors) pointed out;
- Gravel Endurance Racing is a fast growing segment of cyling
- It’s a great tidbit of cycling culture – and Minneapolis
- Our mates at Twin Six – design the shit out of stuff and the kits and t-shirts will be available for global purchase (liking the design on the flyer)
- The new Challenge Tire – designed for gravel endurance will debut at the event (and we will se more on that).
I think we can look forward to seeing more on this event and hopefully it might spark some more events globally. Well worth the support. www.almanzo.com
