The Manhattan Portage – NY Messenger Jr landed on my desk a month ago and I’ve used it for the past month on a daily basis for commuting to work and back. When the bag arrived, after a long time using a ruck sac, my first thought was, I’m not going to get my gear in that!? It didn’t look very big, it’s volume is stated as 11 litres and somehow it managed to swallow more than you would think. I grabbed my usual gear to commute with, lo-and-behold in it went with room to spare. Worries addressed there and then. And off the bag and I went.
My usual ride is urban, across Bristol to near the city centre. The NY Messenger Jr. fits in well with this environment, in terms of it’s toughness and looks. Perfect for the city commuter. Made from 1000D CORDURA® Classic fabric (Main Body) and a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects, Manhattan Portage know they have made a bombproof bag. After one month of use, there is not a scratch on it. I didn’t treat it with any reverence, just got on with using it as my daily bag.
I was hoping for a stabiliser strap like on Manhattan Portage’s larger bags, although in use it would have been rarely needed. I found that keeping the right strap length kept it in place, if loaded right. The wide strap is great and helps support the load without digging in.
The construction of the bag is faultless, with heavy duty stitching that isn’t going to unthread after a few months, or even years, given the reasonable price of £89.00, this bag is a bargain and will outlive many cheaper bags. They use Delrin hardware for the clasps and buckles, which are all branded, which shows attention to detail, as well as the quality choices of components.
Overall a fantastic messenger bag; that is fit for purpose, comes in a range of colours, that is hard wearing, stylish and reasonably priced considering the quality. I would also say that Manhattan Portage is a credible company and a good ethos and it’s all here for you to read.
