Reynolds 921. It’s stainless, it’s cheaper than 931 and 953 and it’s new to the bike industry though it is known in other industries as 21-6-9 due to it’s make up of 21% Chromium, 6 % Nickel and 9% Manganese. Ted James talks us through it thanks to Bespoked. If you follow either on instagram you’ll have seen a bit of the work that’s been going on with it. So why choose 921 over 931? Cost. It will be cheaper but 853 still has the edge for price and strength unless you really want stainless. Sounds like 921 will be a solid choice for winter bikes, cyclocross and tourers. Choose one of the other stainless steels if you want to save on weight and seeing as the price difference in a custom built frame between 931 and 953 is not much we’d still pick 953. Why not!
