Specialized AWOL

I’ve been banging on about these sort of bikes for a while, see here and here. I’m not looking to coin a phrase or start a trend, I just think for most of us a bike in this ‘any road’ category would serve us well. The closest thing to a swiss army knife in bike terms. So I was thrilled to see the Specialized AWOL on Prolly’s website. I know many of you might argue over it’s nature, it’s not one thing or another… That is true enough but, I like the idea of mixing things up. Gravel road riding is gaining popularity as is longer riding and this needs appropriate bikes. It’s good to see a big brand pushing this and things at Specialized seem to be going in the right direction of recent (in terms of bikes and gear in general). They’ve done the right thing with this bike and it’s marketing trajectory too. Handing over the early production/protos to hardcore riders who will thrash them in the Transcontinental Race, giving the bike the kudos it needs. To be perfectly honest I’m loving the tumblr they set-up for it. Check out more on the up and coming AWOL here.
