So the Tour de France 2014 is well underway and they are now shooting their way into France as I type. The incredible Grande Depart from Yorkshire was superb. The crowds overwhelming. Truly a great thing. But I still take issue with some fans not leaving enough space for the rider, I personally frown on too much selfie
taking abuse and basically if you try and take a selfie when a careening peloton is fast approaching, best not do it eh? But the crowds overall were awesome to see. Yorkshire certainly did not let the UK down.
The Cavendish, Gerrans skirmish on stage one was a disappointment really, although Cavendish’s behaviour was off it was a shame to see him out. I did however respect his statement after which went some way to addressing what he did but, you have to feel sorry for Gerrans. Jens doing his attack was pretty cool and given he is a year older than myself (Steve) I’m pretty much in awe (as I eat ice-cream from my sofa). Hello Kittel… Again. Kittel is really proving himself and the guy is a machine not unlike Sagan but, such a different style. Who will be in green come Paris? Yellow? I think he is looking at stems, it might be harder this year though. So this could turn out to be one hell of a fight.
What is most interesting this year is the use of onboard cameras. I find this fascinating and voyeuristic in equal measure. It will be interesting to see how this develops or if it passes for a fad. Can’t wait for the mountains and time trial stages. We will try and keep regular musings on the Tour this year but not everyday, too busy watching it to be honest! Viva la Tour de France 2014!
