Tour de France 2015 makes history with Daniel Teklehaimanot! He is the first ever African in history to wear the Polka Dot climbers jersey in the Tour de France. Small thing in global history but, a big thing in Tour history and a welcome one. Cycling is for everyone. He rides for MTN-Qhubeka who received a wild card entry to the tour and I’m sure glad they did. MTN-Qhubeka are also the first African team to race in the Tour de France. If you’re wondering if it’s pure fluke that Daniel is in the polka dot, then maybe his Mountains classification Critérium du Dauphiné win this year will sway you. The man has the potential to take this jersey for a long ride. The real test will come win the roads go up in to the high mountains.
Amongst the carnage of the tour this sort of stuff is great. It was a huge pity that Tony Martin was involved in a crash that took him out of the Tour on Stage 6. I can’t believe how many big names have gone in the under a week! There seems to be no end of crashes, I’m not sure if I remember so many, say ten or twenty years ago? I certainly remember some horrific incidences but maybe not such a high frequency of spills. The last few years has seen a lot. Not sure why or if I’m entirely right in my thinking. It’s a great sport but, crashes don’t really make it for me and just enjoy the racing. If you haven’t seen much of the onboard GoPro footage, check it out, it’s like Big Brother on bikes! Well in terms of endless boring footage at least. Anyway… Actually it is interesting seeing that riders view of things. Mundane things like opening a can of coke by a wind turbine, very Tour like.
